Beginning Watercolor Supply List
Suppliers in Atlanta: Binders, Dick Blick, Hobby Lobby, Michaels. Mail order: Cheap Joes, Jerry’s Artarama
Paper
- Watercolor Paper (140 lb cold press) Strathmore is a good brand for beginners.
Brushes –note: a good brush will last forever and will hold a lot of paint and water. Don’t bother with really cheap ones, you won’t be happy with them.
- A 1” flat brush – one with a plastic handle that is angled on the end is good
- #8, or #10 round brush
Palette
· A plastic palette with a lid
Paint
· A set of tube colors (for beginners, I recommend Van Gogh, or Grumbacher) These brands are economical and have plenty of pigment in them.
- If you can’t find a set that you like, you can buy individual tubes in many colors. If you want to start small, get the primary colors:
- Cadmium Red medium
- Cadmium Yellow medium
- Ultramarine Blue
And add these to round out your palette:
- Some kind of violet (dioxinine is my favorite violet)
- Alizarin Crimson
- Cerulean Blue
- Yellow Ochre
- Sap Green
- Burnt Sienna
- Burnt Umber
- Raw Umber
And any others that you like.
Extras:
Piece of Plexiglas (you can purchase this at Home Depot or Loews already cut) a little larger than the paper you are using. Buy the cheap thinner kind, not the heavy-duty more expensive kind. It should cost under $5 and will last forever.
Drawing pencil
White, plastic eraser
Kneaded Eraser
Paper Towels – please bring some to each class
Small, kitchen sponge
Small spray bottle (Holbein if possible – more expensive but better) If you are not sure about this, I’ll show you the spray bottle I use at the first class.
Plastic water container – very important (cottage cheese containers, are fine)
A little container of salt (the little packages from fast food restaurants work great.)
